I was introduced to both DKC series and Super Mario series at about the same time playing Super Nintendo at a friend’s house in about 1994. Never been really good at either series because I spent half my Super Nintendo time watching my friend going through most level while I would die within 20 seconds. I also never got to play the NES version of Super Mario.

Now that I got my own system and a few games from both series, I must say that I prefer (and by far) the DKC series. I prefer the way you can control your characters.. or maybe DKC’s gameplay is easier?

What are your thoughts? Do you prefer the DKC or the Super Mario series?

Personally, It’s Mario by a long shot!

I began my gaming career on simple sports games like Excite Bike and Baseball, but it was Super Mario Brothers that cemented me as a gamer forever. Super Mario Brothers 3 is arguably the greatest game of all time, alongside Rushdawg’s afore-mentioned Super Metroid.

Donkey Kong Country is also a great series, packed to the brim with a variety of platforming types. The strength of DKC is it is always throwing you a curveball by adding new types of gameplay, but this also means that aside from adapting to the new mechanics there is no spike in difficulty.

With Mario it is essentially a slow build to the penultimate stages, starting with easy jumps and sparsely populated enemies and progressing to tons of hard enemies and tough jumps. There is a progression and a precision on the platforming that you cannot find anywhere else.

Exploring the New World on Nintendo Switch. Currently Playing: Zelda BOTW, Octopath Traveler, Sonic Mania, Yoku's Island Express, Mega Man 11. Currently Watching: Marble Hornets, Luther, Black Mirror, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5. Currently Reading: Influence by Robert Cialdini.

I much prefer the Mario games myself.  I find the experience of playing a Mario game to be much more “fluid” than a DKC game.  It’s difficult to describe, but the Mario games just feel tighter.

That said, the original DKC had much more of an impact on the success of the SNES than Super Mario World.

Which DKC game is your favourite?

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

Love them both but I’d have to give the nod to Mario as a whole. There is a certain tight feeling to Mario games that the DKC games just don’t match.

Generally though I think DKC2 is the best game in the franchise and is the Super Mario Bros. 3 of the series or World depending on which you may prefer more as it greatly expanded what DKC was and made it more involved.

Though I’d say that DKC Returns is better than any of the New Super Mario Bros. games though I haven’t played U or NSMB2 yet.

Oh definitely the Super Mario Series. Back in the day I simply had more fun playing Mario. One day I’ll play through Super Mario 1 thru Super Mario World plus Donkey Kong Country and see if my tastes have changed (I doubt it).

I would have to say that DKC does have much better graphics and the music is a lot better then Mario but in the end it comes down to graphics vs gameplay and I think Mario takes that one home, though DKC returns is better then the new Mario.
