Well I think I will always have a soft spot for Super Mario World. I remember seeing it in our local toy store. They displayed it beautifully and even build a littke wood around the tv screen so it looked a lot like the title screen from the game with the wood. It looked very beautiful and my heart was sold to that little mario. The cap a little to big for his head. Arms hanging at his sides and the little short legs…he moved so fluently and funny. Also the introduction of yoshi’s seemed just what Mario needed. A trusty compabion to battle Bowser. I must have been seven or eight years old. Truly love this game but I can see that Mario Bros 3 has better level design and gameplay. Youth sentiment, such a great feeling

Mario World added and streamlined much but ultimately failed to have the same punch that it’s predecessors did. Many at the time complained about the lack of difficulty compared to 3. Too many coins and powerups, the ability to keep a standby powerup made the game a cakewalk for many expecting the next step on the ladder.
One thing that Mario4 DID do right was the progression of the game. I love how beating a level or finding an exit carved out more of the world for the player. It really added a sense of exploration and mystery that even Mario 3 did not do it as well!
I also liked the way that secrets were expanded upon, with not one But TWO whole worlds that the average player may never even see! Totally wicked!!

One thing all the Mario games have in common is a high replay value. And to me the challenge was not completing the game as fast as possible but playing the levels over and over again. Discovering new things along the way. I still haven’t found everything after all these years, and I doubt I ever will. I have a fun time trying though Like you said, that map was really interesting and always fun to see if you can find that hidden passage. Great game!

Both are terrific, but I feel that Super Mario World is the better game in almost every way. The level’s in Super Mario Bros 3 are very short compared to Super Mario World. You can run trough most of the level’s in under a minute. I also feel that the level design in World is of higher quality. Also, the world map is awesome!
Sorry for the necropost, but I always love SMW vs. SMB3 debates.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is a fantastic game, but I have to say, I personally feel that Super Mario World is better. Obviously, the visuals were improved, but the soundtrack was also better, IMO. More importantly, I think Super Mario World is more fun. First of all, the controls are tighter in my opinion. The level design is also better, and the levels are longer. I prefer the world map over the mini maps of SMB3, as it felt like a more cohesive experience. I also prefer the Super Cape over the Raccoon Tail and the Tanooki Suit, as the cape made Super Mario truly feel like SUPER Mario. I think the boss battles are better. And who doesn’t love Yoshi?
Saying that, both games are absolute Platforming masterpieces.
Necroposting is fine on this forum!
Super Mario World is definitely a fun game. However I enjoyed the plethora of suits offered SMB 3. I loved the Tanooki suit! My favorite part about it was being able to transform into a statue.
I actually liked the separate boards because it made me feel like I accomplished something and it was time to move on to something else.
The music in SMW I felt wasn’t as good in SMB 3. Of course maybe I should play them both again to see if my opinions have changed since I last played them!
