I’ve recently been trying to find new SNES games to play. I mostly look for ”top” or ”best” games lists on Internet to do so. Although there seems to be a problem with this method of research: people always recommend the same 25 games or so on almost every website!
The idea behind this thread is to each recommend to the other members of the community our favorite SNES game of the moment every now and then. It might not be the best game on the system but perhaps a game still worth checking out! I’d love to hear about fresh ”new” games that probably would have never crossed my path.
My first recommendation: The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
It is a very easy – yet very solid game that goes for about 10 dollars. It is still very enjoyable even if like me you aren’t a big fan of the series.

Aladdin seems like a very good platformer! I’ve seen it at a flea market for 35 Canadian dollars a few days ago! I also saw Kendo Rage at another boutique in the same flea market: $CAN 25.. not too bad I guess. Everything retro gaming related is so expensive here in Québec. The sad thing is that with the $US/$CAN conversion + shipping fees + import taxes, it’s more often than not as expensive to buy cartridges on eBay and other online stores than to pick them up at a flea market.

When I recommended The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers last week I was actually thinking about another game. At the time when I was doing some research for my Power Rangers game review, I came across another game called ”The Ninja Warriors” also developped by Natsume and published earlier the same year. The beat ’em up elements from Power Rangers were taken directly from Ninja Warriors but were heavily watered down.
I figured I’d give Ninja Warriors a try since I liked the Power Rangers game so much. I managed to try the game on a flashcart and man… I probably shouldn’t have! The Ninja Warriors is absolutely one of the best games I have ever played on the SNES. Easily in my top 5 and there to stay. Luckily my Power Rangers review is done because after playing Ninja Warriors, it’s very hard to go back to an ”inferior” version of an almost identical game.
I’m planning to review it in the future but I don’t think I’ll have much time with my Masters beginning very soon… So I thought I’d recommend it right now so you guys can give it a shot as soon as possible if you haven’t.
I say I shouldn’t have played it because, well, this game costs over $100 and I’ve been hunting it down since I found out about it. I always thought the first game I’d buy for $100+ would be Chrono Trigger, well no.. it wasn’t! The game seems kind of rare and people seem to try to sell reproduction carts as if they were the original. (I saw a couple on ebay and one at the flea market for over $100). I managed to get a loose copy for $104 CAD, shipping included. The game if full of blockbuster-like stickers and stuff but I believe I can bring it back to its former glory.
Do yourself a favor and find a way to try this gem! Trust me on this one!
Thanks for the recommendation Antarch. Knowing me I at least have to have the manual with it. I know it’s going to cost me a lot of money, but I’ll get it one day.
My next recommendation:
Prehistorik Man. It’s a caveman platformer done really well. I’ll review it eventually … but yeah check that out on Youtube.

If you’re looking for inexpensive, high quality games, I’d recommend:
- Pilotwings – This one is lots of fun and is still only $5 to $10. A good arcade-style flight sim.
- Arkanoid: D’oh it Again – Lots of content (including a level editor) means this game gives a good bang for your buck
- Vegas Stakes – some people really love this game. I’m kind of lukewarm on it, but since you can pick it up for practically nothing, it’s worth a look
- Pop’n Twinbee (Super Famicom) – This is an awesome two-player shmup that is pretty cheap to import. All menus are in English
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

Great game a cartoony platformer where you play as a girl in a fishbowl(?) and use a fishing rod to hook onto walls and platform around the level. I love this game
