The SNES for its part had a pretty good selection of fighters that did a great job of nearly emulating the arcade experience. While of course they couldn’t quite get the same feeling there was always something rather compelling about them on the SNES. While I am not super hardcore elite player I do enjoy fighters to a pretty great extent, particularly 2D fighters, and would love to talk about some of our memories of playing them on our favorite gaming system.
Mortal Kombat II – easily my favorite of the franchise and the SNES port is my favorite version despite having an arcade perfect version on my PS3. I spent a lot of time on this version despite its completely broken difficulty. It was still a ton of fun to play and still very fun even today.
Killer Instinct – I remember getting this around its release, listening to Killer Cuts and playing till my thumb pad went raw from all the combos. So much fun. I used to be fairly decent but now I really can’t figure out the system any more which is kind of a bummer.
Street Fighter II games – Great games, no questions asked. Even if Capcom was beating the horse to death with the updates. I spent a lot of time playing World Warriors with a friend of mine. Also while not related to the SNES, I remember when the arcade version of Super was released and waiting in line to get my ass handed to me by the local good players. I may have even snuck in a win or two.
Weaponlord – I actually didn’t play this till I bought it a couple years ago. And while it looks cool, man is it laggy as hell. I give Namco credit for pushing the system but I think they might have pushed a little too far at the loss of fluid gameplay.
3D Ballz – I remember thinking this looked so cool back in the magazines. I mean it was a 3D fighter of sorts. Unfortunately it plays like a butt and some of the humor is not particularly funny at all. It was a good attempt though I guess.
Ranma 1/2: Hard Battle – This was the first time I ever heard of the show that would become one of my favorite animes several years later as I read about in an issue of Gamepro. The whole concept was just weird. As a fighter though, it is mostly meh. I dunno why companies try to stray from what Street Fighter II set in stone. Sure doing your own thing is good but there is a reason why the SFII model has been such a long running standard in 2D fighters. It just works better.

I loved playing fighters on my SNES back in the day. The SNES was released right around when the fighting genre was born and it benefited from the initial gold rush to try an ape Capcom’s success with Street Fighter 2.
That said, I find that I can’t really go back to SNES fighters anymore. Modern consoles have significantly improved on fighting games, with better hardware (for better animation, etc.) and with more features (online play, etc.).
The games I remember the most were the SF2 series, MK series and to a lesser extent, Killer Instinct.
SF2 was always my game, though I dabbled a little bit into MK and KI since many of my friends got quite into them. I vividly remember that many gamers were getting frustrated with Capcom’s iterative approach to releasing new SF games and wondering when the heck SF3 was coming out. It became a bit of a running joke “when is Super Duper Street Fighter 2 coming out?”. Still, I found that each release did improve on the last and it was good to get new characters to try out.
I’m glad you brought up the arcade experience too. As fun as it was to play fighting games on the SNES, the real action was at the arcade. An entire subculture developed around arcade fighters that still exists to this day. Every arcade had their local “pro” and it was fun to put your skills to the test to see how well you could do against them.
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

I’ll agree that the SNES can’t compare to the arcade or modern experience but even still they are fun to play still. I mean yeah like I’ve said I’ve got arcade perfect MK I-III and better than arcade Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix but sometimes it is just so enjoyable to play scaled down versions and be impressed with how well they did. I still can’t believe Capcom made a very playable port of Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the SNES.

Fatal Fury Special is probably the best 1-on-1 fighter I’ve played for the SNES. FF doesn’t seem to get much credit but I really found it a fluid game with a good roster of varied characters. It has gorgeous graphics and backgrounds too. World Heroes 2 is pretty good as well, a lot better than the original WH. I honestly enjoyed Mortal Kombat & Killer Instinct at the time but when I play them now they don’t seem all that, sadly.

If you like SNES fighters as I still do, try Gundam Wing: Endless Duel. It is bar none one of the most fluid fighters ever made, and still holds up today. Godzilla: Destroy all monsters is also a lot of fun!
One game that gets almost no credit is TMNT: Tournament Fighters, which is another great fighter you should check out.
I will second Fatal Fury Special and World Heroes 2. And for a REAL INTRICATE fighting game with awesome control you gotta play Taekwondo!!!
Exploring the New World on Nintendo Switch. Currently Playing: Zelda BOTW, Octopath Traveler, Sonic Mania, Yoku's Island Express, Mega Man 11. Currently Watching: Marble Hornets, Luther, Black Mirror, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5. Currently Reading: Influence by Robert Cialdini.

When I was growing up, I actually preferred Street Fighter II Champion Edition on Genesis because it played faster than the SNES version. Once you played the Genesis one, you couldn’t go back to the SNES one.
Other fond memories was Tournament Fighters which I bought for $20 at Toys R Us. It was a solid game but lacked that “something” that barred it from being called it an all-time great.
I played Mortat Kombat on Genesis actually because of the blood code. But when Mortal Kombat II came out, I did get the SNES version because it was probably the definitive port version at that time.
My friend lent me his Killer Instinct and I remember how fun it was executing those multi-hit combos in that game.
I played Art of Fighting on SNES and thought it was a good game. That is what led me into wanting to learn more about the SNK universe.
Now though, we’re living in kinda of a special time where virtually anyone can play arcade perfect ports right on their home console in the convenience of their home.
SO happy to hear the love for World Heroes 2 here. That is one of my all time favorite games, and I absolutely adore the SNES port. The original was also a very good port, but is a mixed bag among gamers. You either liked it or you don’t, it would seem.
Haven’t seen anyone throw out Fighter’s History yet. Another solid bare-bones 2D fighter.
As for Fatal Fury Special, it’s one I want to love so badly, but I just can’t. Found the controls to be too stiff. I much prefer Fatal Fury 2, which has significantly better control. Plus, with the boss code, you get 12 of the 16 fighters from FFS. I only play Special when I’m in the mood to use 1 of Ryo, Geese, Duck King or Tung Fu Rue
And I majorly second Tournament Fighters. Damn fine game.
And for any Godzilla fans out there, check out the SFC game Godzilla Kaijuu Daikessen. It is very faithful to source material, and the sprites and music/sound/monster roars will do any GFan proud!

Very true. But maybe I’m just way behind the times, or maybe I just like being in my SNES bubble. But whatever the reasons, I still play SNES ports like the 3 SFII games, MKII, World Heroes 2 and so forth, and I do so quite happily, even knowing they are not 100% arcade accurate. I know I’m not the only one… but we are definitely in the minority haha, however many of us there are.
