I bring this topic to the forum as I have recently started playing “The Lion King” for the Super Nintendo & man is it handing me my a** in old school gaming!! It’s tough in that old fashioned you gotta play it every day and memorize every level and every move kind of way. I never had the title for SNES or Genesis cause while it got great reviews at the time I just never really got into it besides seeing my younger cousin playing it. Maybe I wrote it off as a kiddie title but I’m kind of sorry I did cause I probably would have been better playing it in my youth. LOL!! The graphics are very good for the time & how can ya not love the music but it’s REALLY friggin hard!! Yet I keep playing it…

So what other SNES titles are frustratingly “throw your controller” hard that you like to play? Or maybe don’t like to play…LOL!!!

I remember Super Ghouls and Ghosts was really tough and trying experience, yet I stilled enjoyed it.

I remember borrowing it from a friend when I was in high school. I deliberately skipped school to work on this darn game. When I finally did beat the game, it invited me to replay the whole thing on a harder difficulty. mad

LOL!!! Yeah I remember hearing about that. The Genesis one was tough too although back then there weren’t as many games so you played the crap out of the ones you had!! I was able to go through it with one life eventually cause I had memorized every damn nook and cranny. Don’t know if I have the patience anymore!! embarassed

Hagane is INSANELY Difficult but one of the best unknown gems of the SNES.

Axelay Kicked my ass six ways from sunday!  Any Space shooter.  I’m Terrible : (

Pocky and Rocky is fairly difficult for me…

And who can forget R2:  Rendering Ranger!

And is it just me or does difficulty add a lot of value to games?  I tend to play a game more often if there is some challenge attatched to it!

My favorite use of difficulty has to be Star Fox, where difficulty is used to layer in new gameplay through new enemies, bosses, and levels!

Exploring the New World on Nintendo Switch. Currently Playing: Zelda BOTW, Octopath Traveler, Sonic Mania, Yoku's Island Express, Mega Man 11. Currently Watching: Marble Hornets, Luther, Black Mirror, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5. Currently Reading: Influence by Robert Cialdini.

Yeah, difficulty does add to the value. For me, an easy game won’t be played too often in the future. A more difficult game keeps the replay value higher and me coming back for more.

Oh speaking of Star Fox, I loved that game back in the day! It was one of those games I would play over and over.

Back in those days, the reason why I used to play the same games over and over was because I wasn’t able to get game very often. So I was forced to play what I had over and over. Doesn’t mean those games weren’t fun to play time and time again!

Yeah, same here. I remember once I turned 15 I started working after school and was able to start buying my own games. But yeah when it was my parents buying them I might’ve gotten 6 a year if I was lucky!!

Speaking of Star Fox…have you played the semi-completed rom of Starfox 2? It’s pretty neat to see what might’ve been. There’s some pretty cool gameplay segments in there.

No I haven’t played that yet. I saw Star Fox 2 for sale on a repro site and I was like wtf

I thought it may have been a Japan exclusive. Hmm… wonders never cease.

Yeah it was nearly finished for release on the SNES utilizing the SFX2 chip but then they scrapped it and took the best parts of it for Starfox 64. It somehow ended up getting dumped on the net a few years back and some fans translated it, debugged it and reassembled it  as close as possible to what was the original game. It’s pretty cool to see & play what could have been…

Ok FF V’s last boss is kind of a douche and fairly tough as far as bosses go in FF  games but after beating him last night I felt such an accomplishment and was treated to one of the better game endings I have experienced which always makes it worthwhile!!

You know, X-Kaliber 2097 was a pretty tough game. Bosses are really cheap, game in general is cheap. I cursed a lot during playthrough. I only beat it on normal. I don’t think I could make it on the high difficulties…

Oh, Lion King.  I never fully beat that game.  I bought a book with cheat codes for the SNES, PS1, and N64 when I was in third grade from my school’s book fair.  The Lion King had a level select code that placed you in any level you wanted, including the bonus ones.  I beat all of the levels except for 2 or 3 of them.  Strangely enough, I’ve beat Scar at the end several times.

Currently looking for the following SNES games:

Chrono Trigger

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

 Zombies Ate My Neighbors

TMNT IV

Contra III

I would have to say Actraiser 2. The cheapness factor alone deters me from playing it again anytime soon, if ever.

I would have to agree with Mongunzoo. Pocky and Rocky is pretty hard, even on easy. At least there’s a co-op mode though.

Battletoads in Battle Maniacs is HARD for pretty much the exact same reasons as the NES game.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

I am going to go with super ghouls and ghosts. I did manage to be at once recently but I didn’t go through it with the second playthrough.

Mega Man X is also a pretty tough title at the end. the final boss can be tough and so can some of the sub bosses.

I also second Battle Toads, it is also a very tough title.

I hear that Parallel Worlds, which is a mod for a Link to the Past is also very tough to beat.. I actually welcome the challenge, I think Dark Souls and Demon’s Souls has made me appreciate difficulty in video games.

Mega Man X2 and X3 are even harder then the frst!

Demon’s / Dark Souls is a great example of difficulty done right.  Many games from the 8-bit and 16-bit era had a similar “good” difficulty level, though many games of the era were hard due to bad programming / game design.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

The two Earthworm Jims were really hard games too. My cousin and I could only get to the level on number 2 were you had to push that giant balloon to the end and you were flying past catapulting pigs I believe.

Ah, Dark Souls………..I often think that there is no better game this generation.

-Action-Focused

-Fair but hard difficulty

-an INCREDIBLE story that is there if you want it yet is not rammed down your throat.

-Bosses that are Epic and Memorable.

-A breathtaking world interconnected in lore and location

-Seamless

Anyone who has yet to play this masterpiece NEEDS to give it a shot.

AND BUY IT NEW!!!!!

Lion King is ridiculous; who decided to make a game targeted to little kids so hard? I feel that by the time I die I’ll beat Megaman X, the DKC games, SM All-stars, and SMW, but likely not Lion King. I started it 10 years ago and haven’t gotten past the second level. would at least like to get a few levels ahead.

@Kanto1992, you think you still have that old cheatcode book? if not, do you think i could find a video of the cheat on youtube, or was it pretty obscure?

as for MegaMan X, I’m getting closer to the end but I love it so much I don’t want it to end :(

I bought MMX2 on Virtual Console, yikes is it hard!!!!!
