Topic RSSAs I get back to collecting, it’s definitely noticeable that buying a typical complete and mint Super NES game is on average, more expensive than getting a complete and mint condition Genesis game. For example, Actraiser, a fairly common game, complete, I’ve seen go as far as $60 in an Ebay auction. Meanwhile, Rocket Knight Adventures an another fairly common game, I brought complete for $10. Any thoughts to why that is? Maybe I should do an article on it!

OfflineThat would be an excellent article for the site!
If you have any questiuons about Drive-Up ask me! It is a phenomenon that is especially strong in the SNES auctions!
Just check out this DoucheNozzle as an example

When I read this I knew exactly what he was doing and called him out on it! He admitted to it immediately!
Yeah, I’m not new to this song and dance, but it is a shame that shill-bidding is such a widespread practice…

OfflineWhile shill bidding probably exist, im gonna have to stick with fragile cardboard boxes being the major cause of a price difference, but when comparing, id stick to multisystem ports.. Actraiser may be a much more popular game than Rocket Night Adventure for one, thus resulting in higher prices.

OfflineI absolutely agree with you. The lack of Complete packaging due to mishandling or misuse is the single biggest reason why SNES games are so damn expensive. No other reason comes close to this.
I was just adding another layer. : )

OfflineAnother factor is the number of SNES fans with fond memories entering the market with disposable income. The more customers a market has the less supply.
Many of the people entering the workforce now were 16-bit gamers. I have watched the price increase happen before my eyes since I began collecting for the SNES fanatically around three years ago.
A similar phenomenon happened about seven or eight years ago with the NES.

OfflineI dunno about that, the 16-bit generation players are mostly in their 30’s now, or even 40’s, and have most likely have families and other expenses to concern themselves with than buying expensive games. Id tribute the raise in ALL things retro, to the current retro fad in the western countries. Everyone is into retro, be it furniture, clothing, cars or videogames. Ive noticed the prices rise, especially on ebay or well known online stores in regards to videogames the past recent years as well, and i dont think it has anything to do with nostalgia. Its a fad, and perhaps due to the watered down gameplay in most modern games. Hopefully it will pass so us real retro-gamers can enjoy videogames without paying $20-30 and more for a LOOSE CART(!). In Sweden, unless you find thriftstores or fleamarkets, people ask ridiculous amounts for any retro-game (at least 3-4 times common prices in US), so its much cheaper for me to actually import US versions, even including shipping costs, duty fees and taxes, than to buy in the used market here, namely swedish auction sites or online retro game stores..
When i re-aquired my near mint (and totaly complete) Chronotrigger, i found it in UK actually, for around £100 with shipping, on ebay.co.uk. The same condition, or worse, were going for twice that in Sweden, and in the us around $150-180 at the time.
So most my games, except ps2 and ps3 are US versions, well not the AES obviously (japanese). Hell, i first got into Sega a year or so ago, getting a US genesis 1 and later Sega cd 1, because it simply wasnt worth getting something in europe. I intended on having these region free and hz modded, which has yet to happen. I ended up getting a used EU megadrive though for 1 game, Snake Rattle’n Roll, because an adapter was more expensive! My snes’s are both US, one modded, the other not, and i also have a Japanese SFC, but have not had a EU snes since i sold my first one many years ago. Importing is simply my only real choice with my income-level.
Ive also seen people ask ridiculous amounts for certain games latelt.. Lucienne’s Quest was/is up on ebay at an asking price of $1300. That game didnt go above $200-300 a few years ago, and the general consensious on my “favourite” 3DO-forum is that its an insane asking price. I got mine, new and shrinkwrapped for 150 or something some years ago. Even some of the cheap 3DO games are now commanding fairly high prices, $30-50 for boxed games. System prices has also seen an increase.
So im not sure it has to do with a certain demographic entering the retro-scene, but rather a fad in all things retro, and people are taking advantage of that asking ridiculous prices, and sometimes getting paid by ignorant newcomers.

Here in America, I’ve noticed an interest in “retro stuff” from hair styles, clothing, TV shows, and yes video games.
But more than that, I think there’s people out there that like to prey on the nostalgic feelings of people. Some people will pay a lot for a thing that they use to have as a child.
However I do hope this video game fad or whatever it is goes away eventually. I hate when collectors and resellers attempt to take advantage of people who just want to play the games!

OfflineThere is definitely a retro revival happening in videogames. Though I would hesitate to call it a fad.
In the minds of many, Older systems and their arcade-style values are just BETTER than the modern games. They are more fulfilling even with less technology.
In fact a whole industry of Indie games is cropping up around this love of retro! And it will only get bigger…
Gonna have to look into them.

OfflineYeah, I’m not so sure it’s a fad so much as it is that gamers just miss that feeling they had gaming when they were growing up and realize that very few of todays games just don’t have the same magic. For example I just finished Final Fantasy V last night and I had a blast playing it! I put over 60 hours into it in the last 2 weeks or so. It was MUCH better than Final Fantasy XIII was. Sure FF XIIX has lots of flashy effects and amazing cinemas but it doesn’t have that sense of wonder & exploration that the old FF’s have.
What did I start playing after FF V? I popped in a little Mega Man X cause I had twitchy fingers & wanted to shoot something, while I was playing it I contemplated the next RPG I was gonna devote myself too and it came down to Secret of Mana or Dragon Quest I. I opted for Mana since it was a little more action & considering I had just came off a really long turn based RPG I figured why not mix it up so Mana it was. I just don’t get the same sense of adventure or warmth that these old SNES & Genesis games have from most PS3 or 360 titles. There are exceptions of course but overall I just find myself enjoying the older games much more and it’s not so much nostalgia as it is that they just don’t make them like this anymore.
Not a fanboy, just a gamer...every system has its gems!!
Yeah TK, there is something about retro games that is more appealing than the more current stuff. And I too believe it is a generational thing. We grew up on 8-bit and 16-bit systems, so naturally we are more attached to them. I bet kids who are growing up with X-box 360 and PS3 will prefer those over any other system past or future.

Grimm mentioned shill bidding. If that troll from the Pocky and Rocky Gamefaqs board topic was telling the truth, I wonder how many other weirdos are doing what he mentioned doing. That could a very legitimate reason why games cost so much…
Yeah he was a total douche. He actually thought he was bidding against the same couple of people every time he shill-bidded because in his mind that would mean when they pay more for game X then they will have no money for the next auction so he can win it
. Brilliant strategy i must say except he’s against several hundred thousand who at our age will try n tap into the snes market for reasons you have all mentioned.
Firstly nostalgia, some folks want to go back n play all these great games.
Secondly the collectors, these folks will bid top dollar so do we really need the divvy shill-bidders anyway.
Thirdly and this might not be taken to kindly, but most people whose gaming peak was around the 16-bit era will conclude that the snes is the better quality of console/game library to go for therefore it is in more demand then the Sega.
And lastly this brings me to this, if more people demand software where the packaging is cardboard then prices for mint/good/completes copies will accelerate in value. Remember there is no set price – its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it (unless shilling)
Damn i have some expensive ones left on my list of wants, see if any of you can spot some of these for cheap;
– RockMan X2 – plaformer
– Majyuuou King of Demons – run n’ gun
– Gourmet Sentai Bara Yarou – scrolling beat’em up
– Dezaemon – shooting construction kit/design your own shooter
– Ganbare Goemon 2 – platformer
– Final Fight Tough – scrolling beat’em up

OfflineUnfortunately not, definately not enough to help playing the games. While the majority of my japanese games i would class as action/racing/shooting/fighting genre’s i do have a handfull of rpg’s, a couple ive played through using a guide like Maka Maka and G-O-D but some remain untouched like Magna Braban and Laplace no Ma, i just havn’t had the time to give them a go. I don’t go with emulation so if theres a japanese-only rpg that i really want to play i’ll buy it and use a guide. Thats just me though, i know plenty of people who wouldn’t bother going through that route. If its a certain game not released on Pal or completely unplayable for me i’ll get the US version, thinking about it i only have US games of SimAnt, Libery or Death and Nobunagas Ambition – Lord of Darkness.
I can state here & now that i have no gambling, pachinko, parlour, horse-racing or dog-racing games so its not like im one of those who collects for the sake of it. Every title i own i don’t regret buying. I think as long as you can say that then its a worthwhile hobby.
