Your healthcare provider will prescribe your Safe testosterone injection techniques medication, as well as the appropriately sized syringes and needles. Needle gauge is especially important, as small needles can break if the injectable medication is thick. A nurse or other healthcare provider will teach you or your partner how to administer the injections. It is important that you feel comfortable with the technique before giving yourself the injections. If you are concerned about pain, you can numb the injection site with ice for five to ten minutes.

It is not necessary to pinch the skin during an IM injection. This could result in the injection being delivered subcutaneously rather than into the muscle. Instead, use your non-dominant hand to gently stretch the skin at the injection site. With most injections, it is not necessary to pull back the plunger before injecting. Don’t hesitate to discuss this with your healthcare provider when they show you how to administer the injection.

You may experience temporary pain and discomfort during IM injections, but this usually goes away fairly quickly. Minor bleeding, pain, swelling, or redness may also occur after the injection. If you self-inject into the dorsal-gluteal region, you risk damaging the sciatic nerve. This can cause a painful condition called sciatica, which usually resolves spontaneously but can be uncomfortable for several days or even weeks.

Although unlikely, infection is possible after an intramuscular injection. This can occur if good hygiene practices (such as handwashing) are not followed, needles or syringes are reused, or expired or apparently contaminated medications are used.
