Following on the heels of the highly acclaimed Actraiser, Actraiser 2 sought to ditch the simulation element of the original and instead focus on the action. The sequel also kicked up the difficulty as well! Marktheshark shares his impression here.

Never played ActR 2 but tbh I didn’t exactly enjoy the first one. I must be in the minority as nearly every other reviewer or commenter seems to adore the first one. I found the god-sim bits to be ultimately quite dull/bland sections where you find yourself constantly moving around the screen destroying gauntlet-style spawning zones. On the other hand the platforming sections were better and even though I could distinguish that they were typical early 90’s action gameplay/graphics etc. they do hold a certain charm. I would get ActR 2, despite it being well known for its high degree of difficulty I feel Id enjoy the game far more then I did ActR 1.

I liked the game, but it got on my nerves. I remember when he would get hit, he’d make an “ooof” sound. I thought that was so funny!

I can’t get into the first 1, so I doubt I will be able to get into the second. I have read the second 1 isn’t as good as the first 1 so I can get into the first 1… Well you know =P

Great review. It’s a shame that Actraiser 2 went so wrong, when it had so much going for it.
