Capcom sure did make a lot of beat em ups in their day. Perhaps one of the more lesser known ones was a title called King of Dragons. It’s a medieval themed brawler that was released the same year as Knights of the Round. Read the review here and post your thoughts.

I never actually played Knights of the Round as a kid (not sure if I ever saw it at the rental store), so this game satisfied me. I seem to remember being able to beat it, but that could be revisionist history on my part, if it’s as hard as you say. I agree on the review, by the way: the sum of the parts is solid, but nothing really jumps out at you (except for that KILLER FONT!).

The artistic style of the graphics make the game seem little bit less refined than Knights of the Round, but I don’t find the way the game plays to be in any way broken. In fact, I tried both games on the same day, back to back. I tried Knights first, loved the music and art style. The game controlled well but I had a bit of an issue with it somehow…
Then I tried King of Dragons and I prefered the way the game plays over the other game. I ended up spending much more time playing King of Dragons despite its ”flaws” that are mainly due to the artistic style in my opinion. Even if both games came out around the same time, King of Dragons somehow seems like an older game than Knights of the Round. Play them both in a row and you might see what I mean.
Anyway.. both games are very good from what I’ve played.. but if I were to finish one game first, I’d clearly begin with King of Dragons! The game also seems to have more replayability : try playing has a knight at first, then switch to the elf (archer) character on your second playthrough.. It is a refreshing and very nice change gameplay.

King of Dragons and Knights of the Round just got put on my wish list. Capcom in effect!
Which gives me a random idea. Some time ago we were collecting a ‘best hundred SNES game’ list (or was it 200?). It would be interesting to make a ‘ten essential games’ list for each publisher.
The idea of having a list of Capcom’s beat em ups next to some Megas and Street Fighters titillates me.

I’ve been reading Super Play issues lately and I fell upon reviews of both King of Dragons and Knight of the Round. It seems like the games were not well received at all. Funnily enough, the reviewer also thought that King of Dragons was the better game.. but not by much haha! KoD scored 53/100 and KotR scored 51/100!
In issue 21, the reviewer says :
“In playing terms, KOD is the stronger title of the two, because of the extra couple of characters and the (rather inconsequential, I know) magic facility”.
He then adds :
“Exactly the same criticisms which were levelled at KOD are applicable to Knights of the Round; it’s derivative of many (often better) titles which have gone before it, and playing it is simply an utterly tedious experience. […] Two or three years ago this game might have been acceptable”. (Mott, 1994, 45)
