Legend of the Mystical Ninja, known as Ganbare Goeman in Japan, has a long and rich history in the land of the rising sun dating back to the arcades. However in the Western world we only received the series’ games here and there.

Fortunately, we did get an official release of one of the better titles and an early Super Nintendo title no less. Here is the review of Legend of the Mystical Ninja.

Thank you merlinfunk for contributing.

This review was a long time coming, and now that it’s here, it gets the crowd-pleasing appeal of Konami’s SNES titles.

I think Konami had less games than Capcom (for example) that were ambitious, but I like their genre exercises more. They’re accessible and less concerned with minutiae, and “Mystical Ninja” is one of those games.

Thanks for the review Merlinfunk!  I loved this game as a kid. The Japanese look and feel were really cool at a time when there wasn’t much anime or manga in the mainstream.  I was also blown away by the fact that you could play the first level of Gradius.  Seems like such a small feature in hindsight, but at the time it was awesome.

As for the Konami vs. Capcom comparison, I think Konami was almost perfect in the SNES / Genesis era.  They excelled at just about everything they tried (licensed games, shmups, beat ’em ups, etc.) and had few, if any, bad games.  To me, they were the best developer of the era since they not only made excellent games, they also made unique games for both the SNES and Genesis (each system had a unique Contra, Castlevania, Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, etc. and usually both versions were good).

When looking at just the SNES though, I feel that Capcom was the better developer, simply because they showed excellence in a wider variety of genres (even if they had a few more “misses” than Konami).

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown
