Probably more popular in Japan than in the Western world, the Valis series still has found its following here. As the only Super NES release, can Super Valis IV represent the series well for non PC Engine players? Find out here.

Comment and discuss.

Nice review, I’d give the game three stars too.

I appreciated your comparisons to Castlevania.  This comparison seems inevitable to me when playing a Valis game, since they really look and play like an inferior version of that classic series.

Have you tried any of the other Valis games?

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

It sure looks like Castlevania to me too.. That screenshot of what seems to be a kind of cut scene reminded me of Phantasy Star IV for some reason.

I heard the PC Engline version of this game featured cut scenes throughout the game, not just at the beginning and in the end like the SNES version.

Yep, animated cutscenes. And the original game had two extra characters, and I think it also tied its story back to the first three “Valis” games, none of which I’ve played.

The first 3 Valis games all got Genesis ports.  I’d only recommend playing Valis III and even it’s not that great.

From what I’ve played of them, the Valis games seem to excel at being mediocre.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown
