Nice review, I’d give the game three stars too.
I appreciated your comparisons to Castlevania. This comparison seems inevitable to me when playing a Valis game, since they really look and play like an inferior version of that classic series.
Have you tried any of the other Valis games?

The first 3 Valis games all got Genesis ports. I’d only recommend playing Valis III and even it’s not that great.
From what I’ve played of them, the Valis games seem to excel at being mediocre.
