How long will we be able to enjoy the Super Nintendo and it’s amazing games?

I was wondering this the other day when I realised a game I was playing was 20 years old(!)

The Snes still works like it did when I first got it, and I have a feeling it will for the next 20 years to come!

It seems the Snes is really wel designed. There are no moving parts as in cd/dvd based consoles so that is something we don’t have to worry about. No cd/dvd’s that can get scratched and therefor be unreadable. The cartrdiges always interested me because it’s such a clever piece of storage. They are well made and when kept clean, almost always work perfectly.

Somehow I’m curious if anyone has the slightest idea, how long we are able to enjoy the games on this system.

Im not sure when stuff starts to disintegrate when it comes to storing info on a chip. But atari 2600’s still work fine, both consoles and games.. I wouldnt be surprised if the snes will work fine after 40 years. The atari is close.

Since the SNES doesn’t have as many delicate parts like the new systems do, they should last longer than the PS3 and 360 before having to be repaired.

The only things I can see that could be a problem:

  1. Human error (dropping it constantly, spilling soda over/in it, etc.)
  2. Nature (power outage killing the circuit board)
  3. Battery life of carts. (I have to replace a battery in one of my carts because it’s dead.)

Eventually parts like fuses go out, but even this is easily repairable…

I am working on a repair article to go along with a cleaning one.  It will detail (with pictures!) how to make many of these repairs.

That said, I REALLY hope it lasts forever!  I’ve relied on it for many years, and it is not much of an exaggeration at the rate things are going to say that when all SNES cease to function I will cease to game.

The TC is right in my view, for preservation the cartridge is undoubtedly the cleverest storage device invented.

As for how long they’ll last well thats a matter of opinion but i would like to think the games i own will still be operating in 30+ years time. I see no reason why they shouldn’t. Games with battery backup will most likely have to have the batteries replaced if you wanted to play them with the save feature though this shouldn’t be a problem, a lot of people offer this service and are more than competent.

Collecting Snes games for me is also more then just playing the games, its like buying a piece of history each time i get something. Who knows how many of the boxes or even carts will exist in the future, and in what condition too. It’s nice just to look at what you have with pride and appreciate the time and effort that went into the packaging and the games themselves with the technology they had. At the age i am now i can honestly say that the Snes will probably be my fave console ever. I can’t relive the memories of the past, they were fantastic days playing 16-bit at the time but this way i can continue the legacy, discover new games, play stuff i never would of thought possible on a Snes and have something in the future to show what this wonderful machine did for the video game industry.

The idea of being able to play games on this console for many years to come is one I cherish dearly. So far my super nintendo works just like it did when it came fresh out of the box 20 years ago. It is really that durable. The only problems so far I’ve had are with the power adapter. The wire has to be bend at a certain angle otherwise it will not provide the power. Two adapters of mine have this. I’ve bought a “new” snes recentely and this console doesn’t have this “problem” . You all have great love for this system, let’s hope we can enjoy it for many years to come and that we may experience the power of the snes to the fullest! Playing new games and feeling that first time experience all over again…it’s priceless 🙂

Well I think if our Super Nintendos break down, the fix would be relatively simple given all the info we have about the system via the internet. Even if it is not fixable, you could probably easily find a replacement for it. This gives me peace of mind when I think about this subject.

Well, if you dont mind yellowing consoles, or just get them to scavange the motherboards, i think we’ll be safe for another 10-20 years at least. To my knowlegde, they arnt universally prone to overheating, which is what often kills soldering connections on motherboards (yeah im looking especially at you fat model ps3!) etc, so they should last a good while longer. Having said that, one of my SFC’s do have a malfunctioning reset-button though.. So im gonna have to replace that motherboard since i have no knowledge of how to fix that, if even possible. I need the reset-button to control a future mod im having done to it once i can afford it. So unless you play it everyday all day long, all you might eventually need is a pin connector replacement or two to keep you covered.

I would say the SNES will last for decades.  Enough people know how to fix them, so they should be fine.

Currently looking for the following SNES games:

Chrono Trigger

EarthBound

Final Fantasy II (Final Fantasy IV)

Secret of Mana

Illusion of Gaia

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

 Zombies Ate My Neighbors

TMNT IV

Contra III

even if the cartridges and consoles wear down, the ROM will live on and the games will be around forever
