Until a few weeks ago, I had both my PS3 and SNES hooked to my flat screen television. Online, I came across a A/V cable for the SNES and I found out that all these years I had been using RF for SNES, N64 and Gamecube… (Not much of an electronic geek, right?). It had never even crossed my mind that it was possible to hook up a SNES with an A/V cable or something even better.

So I bought the A/V cable right away and it got me thinking that hooking up a SNES on a flat screen TV wasn’t the brightest idea either.. So I dug up this not-so-old 13 inches TV (box shaped TV that came before flat screens, I don’t know the English word for it) with A/V output and the image seems much sharper. I’m quite happy with that but I’m still wondering if it is possible to get an even sharper image out of my SNES than with my actual hook up.

What kind of screen and cables do you guys use with your Super Nintendo?

SNES games look best on old cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs (aka “FAT” TVs).  They do make “flat screen” CRT TVs, but the TV itself is still “fat” (only the glass is flat).

Your best bet with a SNES is to use S-Video connected to a high end CRT TV (Sony Trinitron for example).

SNES games look ok on better HD TVs, but still not quite as good as a CRT.  On lower end HD TVs, SNES games can look pretty crummy (I have a lower end RCA 19″ HDTV and SNES games produce fuzzy vertical lines on blue backgrounds with it).

I’m personally very excited for the upcoming Retron 5 clone console.  The system allows for HDMI output, which hopefully will make my old SNES games look great on my newer TVs.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

Got a Sylvania CRTV (don’t know the model). If I had the money and space though, I would definitely get and use a SONY PVM instead…

I believe the only TV I have that would be compatible with an S-video cable is my HD TV. I have this 13 inches TV with yellow and white output (A/V I think) and 1 bigger Sony TV with white-yellow-red output.. Would that be S-Video?

Which one would you recommend? A/V cable with 13 inches CRT TV or S-Video cable with a much larger CRT TV.

I tend to think a bigger screen would mean a more blurry image even if the cable used is superior, no? I dont have a SNES S-video cable to test this.

I don’t know. I’ve never used S-Video before so I can’t help you out here.

I have my SNES hooked up via S-video to standard def. TV I got like 10 years ago now. I also use the S-Video for my N64 and GameCube if I want to play my GB Player. Just looks better on that screen than stretched out on my hi-def.

Haha I can’t believe this! I just found a S-video cable for N64 in its original nintendo box lying in the basement. Turns out that it works with my Super Nintendo aswell! I’ve been living a lie since the 1990s.. My RF cable days are finally over!

I’ve played SNES on my 32 in Vizio for years now and it looks fine to me I don’t see to many problems at all with AV and everything. Hell the NES and master system looks good on it, I’ll have to try the Atari.

Always used a CRT TV (though I wish the screen were bigger) with the AV/Scart output. For Antarch’s benefit the Sony Trinitron sounds like the best one to go for.

Last week I plugged my SNES into a CRT Sony Wega TV, not sure about the size of the screen but i’d say its about 25+ inches. The image seems a bit streched compared to the one I get on my 13 inches TV. However the sound I get from my SNES on the Sony Wega is much better and seems ”deeper”. Overall, I’d say I’m quite happy with this new setup :)
