OfflineThe Genesis is viewed as the better console for sports games because it generally had the superior version for all of EA’s titles, plus an overall larger library.
The SNES does have the better Tecmo football games, plus a fair amount of exclusives. Ken Griffey Jr. Presents MLB is the standout and the best arcade-style baseball game of the era. Why Nintendo kept reinventing the wheel with its sequels is beyond me.
Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

Offline@ Rushdawg: Absolutely! As I explored in my piece regarding SNES sports games, The Genesis was THE place to be for Simulated Sports Enthusiasts, as pretty much all of EA’s output on the Genesis was superior until around 1995(basically when it mattered most). Plus they had Mutant football.
Still, The SNES had some boss sports titles as well!
@Masamune: while we re at it, let’s hear a round of applause for the best damn fishing game ever made: BASSINS BLACK BASS!!!!
More on this awesome fishing sim(there IS such a thing?!!!!?) in an awesomely anticipated dual review featuring my dad!

Don’t forget Jerry Glanville’s: Pigskin Footbrawl – Even better than the great ML Football.

Always wanted to just chill out on a summers day, back door wide open, can in hand – with a good fishing game. I’ve never been into the sport, except when I’m watching River Monsters with Jeremy Wade but ever since I saw a review of Legend of the River King for the GB Color I wanted to play something similar. No fishing games ever got released for the SNES in Europe (there’s a surprise) so the first I knew of them was long after I had stopped playing the SNES in my younger years. I’d still like to pick one up but are they just straight-out competition type games or can you sort of relax and go to different places, buy stuff from shops, that sort of thing?

OfflineWhoa, can’t believe I haven’t stumbled across this topic before now.
Many of the good ones have been mentioned, so I’ll throw Acclaim’s NBA Jam out there. The original is very good, and its sequel, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, is phenomenal.
There have actually been several games made in the NBA Jam mold, most developed by Acclaim but some not.
College Slam stays close to Jam but obviously has College teams and the players are all fictional.
NBA Hangtime is a bit of a gem. It takes the NBA Jam theme ‘outdoors,’ still using the NBA’s players and teams but adding a create-a-player mode.
Lastly, I’ll mention Charles Barkley’s Shut-up and Jam as an example of a crappy game in the Jam mold. I remember it being decent on Sega, but for whatever reason on the SNES it hovers in the two-star realm.

OfflineBarkley’s Shut Up and Jam has a pretty popular RPG sequel (made using RPG maker) called Charles Barkley’s Shut Up and Jam Gaiden.
The game was so successful that its creators even went to Kickstarter for funding for a commercial sequel starring Sir Charles’ son Hoopz Barkley in the distant future (though for obvious reasons, Charles isn’t mentioned directly).

Thank you for mentioning this! I had no idea there was a cult interest in Shut Up and Jam. In fact, before I checked it out on wikipedia I wasn’t entirely sure if you were joking or not. Thankfully, you weren’t! In case anyone else wants to look:

Still, I aim to roast the SNES version of CBSUJ when I review it in the not too distant future. ![]()
