Heres a challenge, everyone!  We can all name over 100 games that are great for this system, but what if we limited each genre to only 5 GAMES in an attempt to round the library.

Here are the rules

1.List your top 5 games for each genre from 1 to 5.

2.One game per franchise, please!

3.Only games you yourself have played. This is YOUR opinon!

4.Each day we will change genres.

HERE WE GO!!!!!

PLATFORMERS

1.Super Mario World

2.DoReMi Fantasy

3.Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest

4.Kirby’s Dream Land 3

5.Yoshi’s Island

………………..What a hard genre to do this for!!!!!!!1

Debatably, you may have already broken your one franchise rule with Yoshi’s Island.

Here’s my Top 5:

  1. Super Mario World
  2. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest
  3. Kirby Super Star
  4. Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse
  5. Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose

Note: I am counting Yoshi’s Island as part of the Mario World franchies, otherwise it would have been number 2.  I am also considering Mario All-Stars ineligible since it’s technically a compilation of multiple games.

Now playing: SNES - Phalanx, R-Type III, Genesis - Bio Hazard Battle, PS3 - Dragon's Crown

You can use Yoshi’s Island. In interviews both Iwata and Miyamoto have said that the “Super Mario World 2” moniker was only added to help spur sales in the west, and that they think of it as a stand-alone title. It never carried it in Japan.

Super Mario All-Stars is a compilation of NES GAMES, so it is ineligible

Hey… so it’s a new day, and I came up with another genre for this topic.

SHOOT-EM-UPS

1. U.N. Squadron

2. Axelay

3. Super R-Type

4. Gradius III

5. Star Fox

  1. R-Type III
  2. Axelay
  3. Gradius III
  4. UN Squadron
  5. Phalanx

I still haven’t tried a few SNES classics like Space Megaforce or some of the better SFC imports like Parodius.

Phalanx kind of squeaks in on a technicality, since I haven’t tried some of the other middle-of-the-road SNES shmups like Darius Twin, EDF or Super Nova.  If it weren’t for the one game per franchise rule, Phalanx’s spot would have went to Super R-Type.  In other words; Phalanx isn’t that good.

Space Megaforce is incredible, but prohibitively expensive. (110 dollars cart-only?!? BULLSHIT)! If I ever find a deal in my travels, I’ll send it your way.

This one is SOOOO Hard! Parodius, Biometal, Star Fox, U.N Squadon, Gradius 3, Flying Hero…..all good games.

Phalanx isn’t that great, huh? I still need to get that one, if just for the bizarre cover…

I’ll be doing a full review of Phalanx soon, so I’ll give a more indepth look there

Bottomline: it doesn’t do anything wrong, but it doesn’t do anything to stand out either.  It’s playable and decent fun, but ultimately generic.

Super R-Type by contrast is equal parts awesome (graphics, sound, gameplay) and BS (NO checkpoints, slowdown) but still manages to be the beter game.

You should absolutely pick up Phalanx if you can find it for around $5.  It’s certainly worth that.

Also; best box art ever.  I am serious, it really helps the game stand out.

I don’t have enough experience of SNES shooters to be able to name a top 5. Adhering rigidly to the rules here are my platformers which I meant to post the day before wink

PLATFORMERS

1. Donkey Kong Country 2

2. Super Mario World

3. Super Metroid

4. Mega Man 7

5. Nosferatu

Cool list Ghost.  I wasn’t sure if Mega Man and Metroid count as platformers (I was saving them for the “action” category).

How is Nosferatu?  I’ve heard its similar to Castlevania.

Let’s do puzzle games today.

My list is:

  1. Tetris & Dr. Mario
  2. Tetris Attack
  3. Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine…err I mean Kirby’s Avalanche
  4. Wario’s Woods
  5. Yoshi’s Cookie

For me, Tetris & Dr. Mario wins by default simply because Tetris is the best puzzle game of all time.

I don’t have much experience with puzzle games, so I can’t add any input for this genre.

It’s how each of us define a genre ultimately though – I kind of see platformers as a sub section of Action games. Super Metroid and Mega Man can be classed in various categories but for the most part I’d say they are platformers first, especially MM7.

Nosferatu is a really cool horror platformer but it has control ‘issues’. Basically think of Prince of Persia or Blackthorne type controls and if you can cope with that then you will enjoy this game. I like it mainly because of the gothic theme but it has multiple routes throughout each level or section, there are lots of hidden areas & items, a good variety of evil creatures to dispose of, and it’s a game that sucker’s you in the more play-time you invest into it. I can quite easily see why people don’t like it but I find it’s merits outweigh it’s negatives.

PUZZLE

1.Super Bomberman 2

2.Super Puyo Puyo

3.Soreyuke Ebisumaru: Goemon no Nazo

4.King Arthur’s World

5.The Lost Vikings

Here’s a tough genre (for me anyways); racing games!

My picks are:

  1. Super Mario Kart
  2. F-Zero
  3. Uniracers
  4. Rock ‘N Roll Racing
  5. Top Gear II

Outside of this Top 5, there aren’t any racers for the SNES that I can recommend.  Racing is a genre that modern consoles really did improve upon.
