I just find that I need a controller. It’s not that too many games is too much to handle. I just take it 1 game at a time that’s the case.

I like that ethernet idea more and more now. Grimm is right on one point, there is no need for it to go mass market as the system has a dedicated fan base already that is growing. These are people who will make the time to play each other when they can. Can you imagine the carnage and excitement between all our members in a SFII Turbo or Super Mario Kart tournament.

What do folks think of using emulation as a “try before you buy” option?

This goes along with the “must delete after 24 hours” nonsense most ROM site post.

I do think this is a fair idea for someone who is considering to purchase a pricey game such as Earthbound.  I certainly couldn’t fault someone for wanting to give the game a shot before dropping $200+.

I’ve been a little scared to say this up until now, but I’m going to go ahead: I like using emulators. I have a Super Nintendo emulator, with a Super Nintendo controller and USB controller adapter. It is the experience I am most familiar with, the way others here are familiar with physical consoles. But I do understand the appeal of physical consoles, and far be it from me to deprive others of it.

I treat my emulator like a real Super Nintendo. I don’t play ROM-hacks (though I do have one game translated to English from Japanese) and I don’t save-state.

Never be afraid to say anything here lol!  Fear stifles discussion and that just won’t do…wink

Many Retro gamers scoff at emulation (I am one of them) saying that software is always best on the hardware it was designed with. While I believe this is true if you can get the same level of enjoyment via emulation FOR MUCH CHEAPER than I can via my old creaky SNES, that’s a good thing that will allow you to save much more money that you can then spend on other things you enjoy.

If it feels natural to you then you should do it! No gaming habit is superior to another, simply different.  The problem comes from those who acquaint different with “wrong”.  It may be wrong to me, but it is not wrong to others. I am often harsh on many game designers and franchises (DonkeyBongo, Metroid: Other M, Mario Sunshine) when I see their decisions scare away most gamers.  Does that mean that there are no gamers who enjoy such games? No.

If you enjoy something, enjoy it regardless of what others think.  Life is too short not be yourself…

Firstly, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat rules despite its odd design choice (i.e. can only be controlled via BONGOS).

Secondly, nothing to be afraid of John, LOTS of people use emulators.  I myself used emulators quite a bit circa 2000.   It introduced me to a lot of games that I couldn’t have otherwise tried.

What I dislike about emulators, as I’ve mentioned earlier, is that I feel having so many ROMs at your fingertips cheapens the experience.  Eventually, I found myself only playing a  game for a few minutes before booting up another.   Having a much smaller physical collection helps me stay focused, but that’s just me!

Since I’ve been out of the scene for a while, may I ask what the best SNES emulator around these days is?

I meant to say this in the first place; I have a small game collection as well, it’s only 25 games big (as of writing this, anyway). I don’t believe in having a lot of games just for the sake of having them; they should be games I genuinely enjoy. But I found 25 games that I do genuinely enjoy, so there’s that.

The website I frequent for my ROMs is Coolrom.com. Going by what they say, the ideal Super Nintendo emulator for Mac users is SNES9X. Being a Windows user taking Coolrom’s advice, I use ZSNES.

Wii-RetroImage Enlarger

This is what I play my ROMS with!!! I use SNES9X GX 4.2.9 and it runs SNES games just about perfectly. Even the Super FX enabled chip games run without a hiccup. I imported the Super Famicom Wii controller from Japan as it was a Nintendo Club item there & in Europe I believe. Why it never made it to the U.S. I will never understand. They’re not cheap but for $75 I felt it was worth it because the Wii Classic controllers work well but it just didn’t feel the same. Now I have that SNES feel when I play these things & I couldn’t be happier with the results. The Wii is skinned in a retro design I got from decalgirl.com if I’m not mistaken. Once again, I just wanted a more retro look to my system and that old NES design fit the bill.

How do you go about modding your Wii for playing Roms?

I used the “Letter Bomb” method. There’s several Youtube vids on it. I was a little scared but after a couple trial and errors I managed to get everything up and running perfectly. It really wasn’t too difficult and this is the easiest method of doing it according to the experts. = ) I even have the icons for them on the Wii Menu which makes loading a breeze. I had never modded anything in my life so this was my first and only attempt but it worked out more beautifully than I could have imagined. I also have the VBA GX which is a GBA player as well as Genesis Plus and they too work just as fantastic.

Yeah seriously!! Surprised me too!! Had there been tons of gameplay issues I wouldn’t have dealt with it but there’s really only been one out of literally hundreds of games. Golden Sun 2 has serious frame rate issues. Everything else I have plays perfectly. Even fan translation ROM’s play without a hitch. The fan translation of the Super Famicom version of FF V was amazing!! Played it from beginning to end without one issue.

Glad to hear you say that!!! I dunno what Square was thinking back then but Final Fantasy V was an excellent follow up to IV/II. I loved the story, I loved the characters, I loved the job system, the music was great, it had some cool mode 7 moments, I fell in love all over again & I absolutely adored the ending!!! It made me immediately start playing through VI again.

The SNES/PS one era for Square RPG’s is unmatched!! I have quite a few Square RPG’s to get through that have fan translations.

Bahamut Lagoon

Treasure of the Rudras

Live a Live

Front Mission

Front Mission:Gun Hazard (more of an action game)

Secret of Mana 2

Treasure Hunter G

I left out some other fan translated RPG ROM’s as well….Tales of Phantasia & Star Ocean both of which look amazing & were quite technological marvels at the time with actual voices and HUGE cart sizes. Plus tons of other RPG’s that you may not have known ever existed!!

That is good value, and worth it in the long run.

For anyone browsing who is in the UK, this is the place to go to for SNES modifications. It has a great rep and offers a wide range of mods at affordable prices – – –

Also check their ‘switchless’ modifications – – –

Yeah I think the guy at Game-tech is pretty close to figuring out a component output solution for the SNES. That could prove very beneficial to players wanting an alternate hookup solution for HDTV’s.

Has anyone else here tried Starfox 2 via repro cart or an emulator? It’s quite good actually. Finished it on easy level yesterday but from my understanding the game really opens up on the harder difficulty modes. It’s a different beast of a game. There’s a hint of strategy involved with maneuvering your forces around to protect Corneria and the Super FX2 powered graphics are handled pretty well for a 16-bit machine. It’s a shame it was never released officially.
