Not everyone uses Adblock.  Even if you factor out everyone that uses it, you’re still going to have a nice outreach for this site.

I think the majority of people use Adblock Plus especially on sites like Facebook and Youtube, but maybe im wrong and naive. In any case, i believe its better to grow slow and steady, than to pump out advertisement to gain a large but lurking or even un-active member base. I dont even watch regular tv anymore because of all the advertisement, i consider it equal to home invasion. What i have not asked to see, i shouldnt have to. Not to mention other factors that makes me disgusted with advertisement. So even if this is not a commercial site trying to force stuff on you that you dont really need, its the same principle. Its then better to leave your footprint, use banners on other forums or stuff less intrusive. Hell, we could set up a Snes Hub facebook page, and people could “like” it, then your friends will know, and can pass it on to others.

I’ve thought about ads in the past. I’m still weighing the cost-benefit analysis of this. I would like to try other methods first before I go down that road.

If it were me I would not go down this road until much later.  SNES gaming does not have near enough market penetration for advertising on Facebook outside of the page you already have.  And we are still not still not known to many retro gamers.  We should start there.

What is the product?  Your website which details the SNES.

Who is your customer?  The retro game enthusiast.

Look at this Graph.

3-tiers-of-non-customers.pngImage Enlarger

So look at the retrogamers who populate the various gaming sites and message boards as your Tier 1’s.  They may not know about us but would probably jump into our website if we illustrate the value of it to THEM.  This would mean perhaps advertising to them on sites like Racketboy and Clan of the Gray Wolf.

Tier 2 is the tricky one.  These are the modern gamers who sneer at old systems, as well as retrogamers who have not or will not play SNES. (they are out there, believe it or not).  To get this group involved all we can really do is continue to make the case for the system itself, thereby creating NEW SNES gamers since it is unlikely that an ad (however good) will sway gamers who refuse the SNES on whatever principal.

As a fansite we might as well forget about tier 3, as we will likely never see it.  These are people who are on a whole different planet.  Many of them will have never played a game on a console.  Many of them can only name Mario and Sonic.  THEY ARE NON-GAMERS.  They are non-participants.  This would be your Facebook crowd.

We are nowhere NEAR the need for mass-Ads yet.

is this forum really turning into a product we need to sell? Is this what you want Masamune?

I’m actually with Grimm and in favor of natural growth, as I favor merchandising over marketing.  I.E:  make a good product and they will come.

That said it is not my website so if this is what you want, the above is the way forward.  If you have to advertise do not waste time and money on tier 3 before you have reached tier 1 and 2.

Relax.  All I am saying is that Neither of us favor advertising on Facebook as a viable strategy.

We can come at this from different angles and still come to the same conclusion.  You said “not on Facebook”, and I said “not on Facebook.”

Don’t be so quick to slap an extended hand away….A lot comes from two angles aligning to reach one goal.

I am relaxed, but i also detest commersialism, consumerism and things you bring and then say “you are with me”. You are not. You may be against advertising the site, but you are not against advertisment as such, since by your own admission you love to be a consumtion peddler. Thus, you are not with me. I am not upset just because i set things straight.

Glad that I didn’t upset you because it was not my intent.  No one will ever agree on 100 percent of issues, least of all you and I.  Still, everyone can find common ground on SOMETHING.

Just because I am evil doesn’t mean I can never have an opinion that favors the good now and then.laugh

I never think you are intentionally trying to upset me, we’re cool on that level. Nor do i think YOU are evil, but i do consider what you represent is ruining our world. Consumerism, capitalism, profiteering, whatever you wanna call it, is the evil i fight on an every day basis, and when i see you calling a fan website a “product”, and draw in business school models do increase population on the site you cant miss to see where im coming from when i give critisism on that aproach. Its masamune’s site, and his choice ultimately, but i would hate to see this becoming a dime a dozen site with advertisement for and on the site. Id rather donate some for the upkeep cost than to bring in advertisement either way, in or out.

Yes, you have said you love to sell stuff to people, no? Consumption peddler is what that means. The person with the most stuff and money when he dies does not win, he only succeeds in taking advantage of most people.

Voluntary donations are actually a good idea.

As far as that model goes, yeah I can definitely see where someone with your view could be upset.  All that was intended for was to show a WAY FORWARD if he is determined on that path.  I happen to think that there are much better avenues.

“Consumption peddler is what that means. The person with the most stuff and money when he dies does not win, he only succeeds in taking advantage of most people.”

I’m actually with you on this one, too.  He who dies with the most toys still dies.  You cannot take it with you.  understand that I only use my job as a means to enhance my life which is so unfairly short.  Most people do not enjoy work, I am lucky in that I do, yet there are places I would much rather be.  I like to travel.  I like to eat good food.  I like to explore other avenues of thought.  I just ordered those documentaries you posted in the digital distribution thread.  None of this would be possible without my employment.  I would be unable to travel to London or see a Soccer game or get on a fishing vessel.  It all takes money.

It isn’t about taking advantage, it is only about getting the means to enhance my life, of which I only have one of.

In all seriousness, it was not my intention that this website should have adverts or sell out in any way.  I was wondering how we could reach more people.  I, for one, stumbled upon this on Facebook.  Not everyone will do that.  I would like to see more people comment, so we can be a more diverse forum.

We know what you meant.  It is a good idea, just not yet.

As to if it ever happens that will be Masamune’s call.  But you found us on Facebook, so I am Willing to bet that others who enjoy SNES will find it that way as well.

All in time……

Technically it is taking advantage. You work for a private company, they take advantage of your work to create a profit of the value you add through your work. You dont get close to that value in your paycheck. Yet the guy on top, who generally doesnt do shit to create value, takes it all and shoves it in his own pocket. I cant even find work, because i cant work 100%, meaning 8h/day 5 days a week. I can do maybe half that. So im not profitable and too expensive for a company to hire. Even in the public sector.

When i DID work back in 2004, my last vacation replacement gig, i created easily 4 times the value of what i earned. You know this is true. And you also know that the people who build wealth for someone else is taken advantage of, just look at Foxconn for an extremely obvious example, having put up suicide nets to keep people from jumping of the factory roof, and forcing them to sign contracts promising they wont kill themselves at work, or their relatives will not recieve compensation. This does not happen if a worker is not taken advantage of, so you can get the latest electronic gadged like a new iphone every other month.

You sucked me into another argument about this, but this time im truly done discussing with you. I will not stand for that kind of treatment of other human beings, where you will. Im done.
