As SNES Hub’s resident SEGA-fanboy, I’ve been inspired by Mongunzoo’s “Must Play SNES games” thread and thought I’d give its main rival similar treatment.
Below is my must play list. Feel free to suggest additions / removals.
Looking at the list below, its incredible how much different it is than the SNES list. Though they were competitors in their time, in 2013, the SNES and Genesis game libraries actually complement each other, with each offering experiences the other lacks.

How about Twinkle Tale, Mega Man: The Wily Wars, and Snake, Rattle and Roll?
Crusader Of Centy is also one of the greatest Zelda clones Out there….Some would say it is better than ALTTP.
Nevermind, you’ve got Crusader of Centy and Mega Man covered!

I would also like to put Panorama Cotton and Ecco: Tides Of Time Forward.
……Dune 2 arguably paved the way for console Strategy games and it’s hella good.
And lets hear it For Macdonald’s treasure Land Adventure. That shit was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

If The SNES is the Endless Ocean Of Quality, Then the SEGA Genesis is the Great Unexplored Jungle. I think that the Genesis hides some AMAZING games. Perhaps even more than the SNES.
When I am FINALLY done with the SNES, I look forward to delving into the jungle…..
What I like about gaming is that you can approach some of these older systems with the same context you would approach an adventure expedition to the Gobi, or a Trek into the Peruvian Jungle. It is an awesome adventure, filled with sights along the way that you might never see otherwise.
You have to be there!

Hector,
Golden Axe 2 deserves a spot. Consider it added. I found Golden Axe 3 on the other hand to be pretty bad. What did you like about it?
Mark,
Great suggestion. I love Vic Tokai games. I’ll add it to the list.
Mong,
Never played Twinkle Tale, but it has a good rep. I’ll put it on the list on your recommendation.
Is Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll like the NES version? If so, consider it added.
Panorama Cotton should be on the list for all the high rollers out there.
I’ll replace the original Ecco with Tides of Time. Tides of Time is the better game, though I prefer the original as it is more of a pure “dolphin simulator”
I’ll add Dune 2 and MacDonald’s Treasure Land as well. Anything by Treasure should probably be on the list to be honest. Did you ever try Light Crusader? I didn’t and it’s got a mixed reputation, but I’m considering adding it out of respect for Trevor.
Oh and anyone who prefers Crusader of Centy over a Link to the Past is crazy. The Sonic cameo is neat though.

I think so too, but I have a friend that loves to argue it’s merits and thinks ALTTTP “sucks ballz. Zelda 1 FTW!!!!”
And you think I’m bad lol…..
Light Crusader is a game I like, but boy it would be hard justify it for this list…
Snake is even BETTER on the Genesis. It is amazing how many of the NES classics the Genesis got, instead of the appearances we thought they would make on the SNES.
In honor of your list, I am going to be on the hunt for the super-obscure Genesis games. Still a lot of uncharted territory there, despite amazing attempts by SEGA-16

To me, the SNES and the Genesis will be forever linked.
So many of the best experiences on each console came out of the intense competition between the two companies.
Sonic was born out of an attempt to overtake Mario; something we surprisingly didn’t see much of during the NES days. SEGA came VERY close to succeeding and made it look so easy, that we unfortunately got “Sonic Clone” as a genre during that era.
Donkey Kong Country and its unique graphic style were born from a Nintendo that was feeling very threatened by SEGA’s add-ons and upcoming 32-bit console.
Some have suggested that Uniracers was partially developed to showcase how fast a SNES game could run (albeit with some bland backgrounds) in response to the infamous “blast processing” campaign.
And back to Crusader of Centry and Beyond Oasis (and Landstalker and Light Crusader). These games were all an attempt by SEGA to ape Zelda. They didn’t quite come as close as Sonic did to Mario, but we got some fun games in the process.
By the way, I’ve never heard of El Viento. What’s it all about?

For El Viento, think Valis done right. Boomerangs and Magic spells in a sidescroller that moves very briskly. It is good. Check it out!
Honestly in my research for 1991…..How should I put this on a SNES fansite……..Sonic did more to sell people on the 16-bit generation than Mario did. Sonic was more important to Mario in this time period. There. I said it. What did Mario World do that couldn’t be done on NES (on Mario 3)? Obviously not enough to make consumers get over the hardware hump.
Uniracers was amazing, though it kinda proved SEGA’s Point lol! It could have been a great new franchise, if not for U.S courts deciding that Pixar has ownership over the concept of the unicycle…What a crock of shit!
Vectorman also was a way to show that Genesis could do Pre-Rendered graphics.

The problem was that Mario World came out too close to Mario 3 (only a year apart).
Mario World looked like a prettier Mario 3, tons of fun, but nothing the average NES owner hadn’t already played (pretty much non-stop for the past year). Literally, every NES owner I knew at the time was playing Mario 3 in 1990 / 1991.
Sonic on the other hand was a breath of fresh air, a colourful, likeable character in new style of platform game that obviously couldn’t be done on the NES (and arguably couldn’t be done on the SNES, especially in ’91). Sonic’s levels were larger, more open and encouraged exploration. Once you mastered it, you could reach and maintain incredibly high speeds.
Green Hill Zone is easily one of the greatest opening levels in gaming history. It immediately hooked new players and really sold folks on what Sonic and the Genesis could do.
We all know the SNES had better graphical and audio capabilities than the Genesis (and in 2013, there are plenty of examples to prove it) but if one were to just put Mario World and Sonic side by side, its hard to argue that the SNES blows the Genesis out of the water in the graphics / sound department. Heck, some folks even prefer the look / sound of Sonic.

Love Rocket Knight Adventures. Definitely my favorite Genesis game. Got to thank the Happy Video Game Nerd for introducing that one to me a few years back.
I love Derek’s videos! He definitely did the game justice (as well as your beloved Earthbound).

How about Dinosaurs for Hire? I seem to remember it fondly, though I have not revisited it for YEARS.
Thoughts? Is it worthy?

I found golden axe 3 to be the only golden axe Icould almost beat I sucked at them but liked all 3Really? I beat Golden Axe on my very first playthrough. I’m glad I borrowed it from a friend. I would have been pissed to have my dad pay full price for it!
To this day, I STILL can’t beat Golden Axe. I always end up dying in the last level (the one after you’ve rescued the king / princess).
Golden Axe is short, like all beat ’em ups, but I find it infinitely replayable.
