OfflineThanks for the suggestions! I’ve updated the list.
Mong:
I thought Valis done right was called Castlevania? In any case El Viento sounds good, I’ll add it to the list and give it a try sometime.
I completely forgot about Dinosaurs for Hire. It’s a decent run and gun game.
Hector:
I’ve put Golden Axe 3 on the list. It’s my least favourite of the trilogy, though I never gave it much of a chance. Maybe I’ll try to beat it one day. I’m with you; the other games are way too hard!
Masa:
I’ve added Tiny Toons and Blades, though I’m not familiar with the latter. What’s it all about?
I added Pier Solar as well. I was debating whether to include it or not when I first made the list, since it wasn’t released in the system’s “lifetime”, though on second thought, that shouldn’t really matter in 2013. It definitely helps the Genesis’ RPG library, which is pretty weak (especially compared to the SNES).

OfflineWow, Gleylancer! I only wish I could get this game for a decent price. I wouldn’t mind buying a flawed copy, as long as it is complete. I lucked out with MUSHA Aleste by buying it for only about 5,000 yen because its label was a bit ripped.
My daughter likes watching me play Dai Makai Mura. I think it’s called Ghouls & Ghosts in the West? Ghosts & Goblins was the first game in the series, right? She also gets a kick out of watching me play Space Harrier 2, especially to see the Flatwoods Monster as the second level boss. Phelios is a nice shmup. Arrow Flash is a fun shmup with a ship that transforms into a mecha. There’s a Qix game on the Genesis that’s fun. It’s called Volfied here in Japan. And I really enjoy Rolling Thunder 2. I don’t know why, but I like it more than the third game.
Here are some Japanese-only games that are fun. Granada is a top-down tank shooter. Devil Hunter Yohko is a nice Valis-esque sword slashing platformer, based on the anime. Doraemon is a very challenging platformer. Vixen 357 is a cool mecha strategy game, if you’re into Super Robot Taisen or Warsong/Langrisser. Gynoug is an interesting shmup. Magical Daruruto-kun is a quirky platformer based off an anime I’ve never seen before.

OfflineIs the list in any particular order? Seeing that you put many games and their sequel one after the other got me wondering… I know nothing about this system except the Sonic series. Everyone I knew had a SNES except one kid who owned a Genesis. Although today this system intrigues me and I feel like I want to get my hands on one of them.
So… should I take a look at the 10-20 first titles of your list to get a general idea of what the best games are (as I will certainly not read/watch reviews for 100+ games before getting the system). So far I’m interested in Sonic (not sure which one I played back then or which one is best..) and Shining Force 2. Any other suggestions?
I’m also thinking about getting the ”Model 2” version, mostly for its look. Is it a wise choice?
When I first got my Genesis way back when, I had the 2nd model. It’s fine as far as I’m concerned. Although there are certain model 1 Genesis systems that seem to produce better sound than the model 2. Here’s an example:
http://arcade.ym2149.com/megadrive/
As for the list, I don’t think they are in any particular order. Sonic is always a safe way to go to get you started. Shining Force 2 is a strategy RPG, so if you like that kind of game, you should check it out. But any of those games on the list are solid choices.

The list isn’t in any particular order. As Masamune said, the earlier Model 1 Genesis systems have slightly better sound. Also, Hellfire plays its sound at half speed on a Model 2. Other than that, Model 2’s are great (its the version I own).
My personal Top 10 Genesis games are:
- Gunstar Heroes – I can’t recommend this game enough. This would be #3 on my Top 10 16-bit games (both Genesis and SNES)
- Sonic 3 & Knuckles (technically two cartridges, but I count it as one game since they lock on to each other)
- Phantasy Star IV
- Rocket Knight Adventures
- Contra Hard Corps – Better than Contra 3!
- Shinobi III
- Castlevania: Bloodlines
- Lightening Force
- Sonic 2
- NHL ’94

Those are some great suggestions!
Ghosts and Goblins was indeed the first game in the series. It had an arcade and NES / famicom release.
Space Harrier 2 definitely deserves a spot on the list. Can’t believe I forgot it.
Rolling Thunder 2 is a lot of fun. I personally prefer the third, but the second game is no slouch. Consider it added!
Phelios is solid, though I wouldn’t say its amongst the top vertical shmups on the system. Still worthy of inclusion on the list. The same goes for Arrow Flash as well.
I’m not familiar with the Japanese-only games you mentioned, but I will add them based on your recommendation.
We actually got Gynoug in North America. It was called Wings of Wor over here.
While on the topic of shmups, I’m also thinking that Vapor Trail and Air Buster (Aero Blasters in Japan) deserve a spot on the list.

OfflineBlades of Vengeance is so effin’ good it’s unreal that EA managed to even do it. One of the finest games for the system in my view, everyone should play it. It’s not really much like Golden Axe, more similar to Cadash but far better. I’d say it’s more like a Castlevania game.
Ok most of the titles have been mentioned so I doubt I have too much to add but if you want my opinion on the best games I’ve played for the system here is a quick checklist:
- Adventures of Batman & Robin
- Afterburner II *Not on list
- Blades of Vengeance
- Bram Stoker’s Dracula *Not on list
- Comix Zone
- DecapAttack
- Dynamite Headdy
- Fantastic Dizzy *Not on list
- Golden Axe Trilogy
- Gunstar Heroes
- Jerry Glanville’s Pigskin Footbrawl *Not on list
- Landstalker
- Light Crusader
- Micro Machines ’96 Turbo Tournament *Not on list
- Phantasy Star IV
- Rocket Knight Adventures
- Shining Force
- Shining Force II
- Shinobi III
- Soleil (Crusader of Centy)
- Sonic the Hedgehog 1,2,3 & Knuckles
- Sparkster *Not on list
- Streets of Rage Triliogy
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Hyperstone Heist
- The Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis)
- Tiny Toons – Busters Hidden Treasure
- Twinkle Tale
Others that are not on the list but also worth mentioning if anyone’s interested:
- Asterix & The Power of the Gods
- Bimini Run
- Cadash
- Calibur .50
- Dynamite Duke
- Growl
- Haunting: starring Polterguy
- Rastan Saga II
- Slime World
- Sunset Riders

OfflineI hope you enjoy Bloodlines!
I personally love its soundtrack. You have to be a fan of the “Genesis style” to truly get into it, but it has some of the best compositions of any Castlevania games.
The tracks from Level 2 and Level 4 have been remixed in future Castlevania games as well.
MUSIC SPOILER BELOW
The last level has a sweet remix of Simon’s Theme (i.e. Level 1 track) from Super Castlevania IV

I’ve always thought of Bimini Run as pretty slow and boring. Am I missing something?
Care to elaborate why they deserve inclusion on the list?
I should probably just add Undead Line since I’ve got a soft spot for shmups!
The only one I’m hesitant to add is Sunset Riders. It’s good, but the SNES version is MUCH better.

Oh Antrach, I forgot to mention. If you get the model 2 Genesis, you can’t easily use it with the Power Base Converter. So if you had planned to use that to play Master System games on your Genesis, you’d be better off with the Model 1 or even the Model 3 will work with the converter.
I have a Model 2 but if I’m honest the Model 1 looks a lot nicer aesthetically. It also looks better with the Mega CD Model 1.
Yeah and it sucks about the MS converter with Model 2. Would you not be better off looking for a cheap MS console. They’re still pretty cheap in the UK (though they are rising in price as you’d expect) but what’s the going rate for them in the US/Canada?

OfflineRight Rush, to answer your questions. First, thanks for adding Fantastic Dizzy and UndeadLine, they are worthy of being played. As to the other suggestions, well the latter list was not really for review, they were just titles that didn’t happen to be on there but I’ll get to that later on. I’ll just go through some of the best titles I had played.
Afterburner II *Not on list – The definitive Afterburner game to play. It gets so close to being arcade perfect you’ll think your strapped inside the cock-pit. Great visuals and audio with loads of action. The scrolling is terrific and really does a good job of making the game look appealing.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula *Not on list – An improved game based similarly to the Galahad engine. While the gameplay is arguably nothing special, the action is intense and complimented by some of the best audio ever to come from the Genesis’ sound-chip. The graphics are crisp and the bosses are demonically tough.
Jerry Glanville’s Pigskin Footbrawl *Not on list – A medieval American Football game where you can use weapons and objects on the field to batter your opponents, yep you heard me. If it sounds like simple mindless violence.. that’s ‘cuz it is. But there is a hell of a game here. Don’t believe me, this guy’s review does it justice I assure you. http://www.gamefaqs.com/genesi…..view-31218
Micro Machines ’96 Turbo Tournament *Not on list – An excellent update of MM2 but with new tracks added and a track construction kit so you can make up your own madcap races. A wide range of vehicles, perfect controls and some imaginative tracks such as racing in a bathtub to screeching round a pool table. Did I mention the cart has an additional 2 ports built into the actual cart so you can play 4-player action right from the bat Multi-player heaven.
Sparkster/RKA2 *Not on list – Well firstly this is a different game to the SNES version, something that I prefer when the two consoles have ‘same titled’ software in their libraries. Its similar in style to first game but also in some ways its an improvement over its SNES counterpart – having less slowdown, a better balance of gameplay and surprisingly better music. It should be added.
The others with the exception of Caliber .50 I think don’t really deserve to be on the list but they are fun.
Bimini Run isn’t that great but its hard to pin it to any particular genre, its the only mission-based boat shooter I’ve ever played. Exploring the islands is quite fun but then again you don’t get much time while your chasing the target.
Growl is amusing, its like Golden Axe but its set in 1920/30 or something and you have to stop a gang of poachers in Africa. Using an Elephant to trample on people is so cool!
Cadash is a decent hack n’slash with rpg overtones but it’s nothing special.
Sunset Riders on the MD is the only version of it I’ve played so I wouldn’t know if the SNES’ version is better. It’s good anyway but way too short.
Now Calibur .50 is well worth checking out, its set in 70’s Vietnam and its basically a top-down shoot ’em up as you navigate through the Ho Chi Minh trail in order to liberate his captured comrades-in-arms. This should be added but it’s your call.

Yeah the “Genesis style” just does little for me. There are some good Genesis soundtracks I like (the Sonic ones in particular) but generally most of the music just sounds a little too synthesized for my tastes, if that makes any sense. I’m no music snob by any means but that is just my feeling on it.
And after finding out a few useful tricks for 9 lives and essentially unlimited continues, I’m making steady progress in the game. Some unique level designs and takes on classic enemies and, so far, fortunately few medusa heads.
Also is it me or did Treasure people work on this game? Because the boss of level 4 seemingly has their fingerprints all over it.
Playing with Power, Super Power!

I’ve seen Sega Genesis systems going from 30 to 50 canadian dollars at retro game shops / flea market stands / ebay. CAD and USD are almost equivalent nowadays. That’s a little bit cheaper than a Super Nintendo and the ”best” games are also somewhat cheaper. Still, going with Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis collection was the best way for me to get in touch with this system. And I’m quite impressed with the games I’ve tried so far. As for the Master System, I haven’t really looked into it and honestly, I haven’t seen any with my own eyes yet!

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis collection is one heck of a value. It belongs in every retro gamer’s collection. Too bad it doesn’t have Gunstar Heroes on it!
At $20 (the current going rate) it’s an absolute steal.
Gunstar Heroes is one of a few notable omissions, especially considering the package included some stinkers like Fatal Labyrinth.
It’s also a bummer that the game doesn’t let you “lock on” Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles to let you get the true experience.
